Green Card Renewal Instructions Using Form I-90

If you have a green card that is about to expire or which has been lost, stolen, damaged, or made inaccurate, you will need to apply for green card renewal. When you renew a green card, the USCIS will send you a green card replacement with a new expiry date. This new green card will help you prove your permanent residence status in the US.

To apply for green card renewal, you will need to correctly complete and file USCIS form I-90. To do this, first download the latest version of Form I-90 from the USCIS website along with all the instructions for the form. Review the instructions and the form before filling out anything. In order to fill out Form I-90 to renew your green card or get a green card replacement, you will need to:

  1. Complete your full name. If your name has changed since you last received your green card, you will need to check the appropriate box and will need to submit evidence of the name change. Details about submitting the correct documentation can be found in the Form I-90 instructions.
  2. Complete your address, including your US mailing address and residence address, if the two are different.
  3. Complete your birthdate, country of birth, town of birth, gender, A-number, and Social Security number where required on the form.
  4. Complete your three-letter class of admission code. This can be found on your green card. You will also need to indicate the date of admission where required by the form.
  5. If you are a permanent resident, complete section A of Form I-90. You must not complete this section if you are a conditional resident. This part of the form will ask you why you are applying for green card renewal. You must supply the reason as well as any supporting documentation required in the instructions.
  6. If you are a conditional permanent resident, complete Section B of the form. Do not complete this section unless you are a conditional permanent resident. This part of Form I-90 will ask you why you are applying for green card renewal. Depending on your case, you may need to answer additional questions or provide supporting documentation. Be sure to follow the instructions included with Form I-90 carefully.
  7. Complete the additional Part 3 information of the form. This will ask questions about your immigration and a few questions about your family.
  8. If you have a disability, you can complete Part 5 of the form.
  9. Sign the form and file it with the appropriate filing fee.
